Mary Elizabeth “Bess” Hoffman, 71, of Mount Union, PA, fell asleep in the Lord Thursday, July 25, 2024 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born August 4, 1952 in Huntingdon, PA, she was the daughter of the late William Sr. and Frances (Harris) Baker. She was united in marriage to James E. ("Jim") Hoffman, Jr. on April 1, 1972. Jim preceded her in death on July 2, 2020.
She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Prevatte of Arvada, CO and two beloved grandchildren, Zoe Prevatte and Clayton Prevatte, also of Colorado. Bess is also survived by four siblings, Georgianna (Steve) Abrashoff of Mount Union, Roseann (Carl) Varner of Blandburg, PA, Rosalie Baker of Camp Hill, PA and William (Mary) Baker, Jr. of Standish, MI. Bess had numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, along with a large network of friends.
Mrs. Hoffman was very active with the Bricktown Senior Center in Mount Union, socializing with friends, making crafts, and playing cards on a regular basis. She served on the Board of Directors for a local eye care organization, helping local residents find access to free/affordable eye care and prescriptions glasses. She was a volunteer at the Meals on Wheels program in Mount Union in the 1970s and was a charter member of the Mount Union Food Bank. Bess taught Sunday School for many years at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and was also a Girl Scout leader for many years. She had previously served as Secretary/ Treasurer of the Mount Union Women’s Democratic Club and recently was a campaign volunteer. She was also a member of the Mount Union Area High School Band Parents Association while her daughter attended high school. She was a 1970 graduate of Mount Union Area High School.
Along with being a homemaker, Bess was employed at the former Poser’s Department Store in Huntingdon, PA and maintained many friendships from those years.
Bess was an animal lover, and a memorial fund at the Huntingdon County Humane Society will be established in her memory.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, September 15, 2024 at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 100 S. Jefferson St., Mt. Union, PA.
