Leroy Whitsel Obituary

Leroy W. Whitsel, of Three Springs, PA left his earthly home and entered into the eternal presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 2:08 AM on September 13, 2024.

Born on March 5th, 1942 in Cromwell Township, Huntingdon County to the late Sherman B. and Bernice A. (Hileman) Whitsel of Three Springs, PA. He was united in marriage to Margaret “Peggy” Whitsel on April 17th 1961 and spent 63 beautiful years together. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Robert L. Whitsel of Dalmatia, PA, daughter Tammy J. Gutshall and husband Richard of Shirleysburg, PA, daughter Michele I. Price and husband Todd, of Shade Gap, PA and son Sherman S. Whitsel and companion Tracey Sechrist of Three Springs, PA. Twelve grand-children and 26 great-grandchildren. Siblings Betty Whitsel and husband Ted, Ellis Whitsel and wife Gloria, Daniel Whitsel and wife Debbie all of Three Springs.

How do you sum up the life of someone in just a few simple paragraphs? Leroy was a beloved son, brother, cousin, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, nephew, uncle, friend, co-worker and mentor.

Leroy’s early career consisted of owning and operating a garage in Mount Union, PA and later began his own trucking business for a short time; L.W. Whitsel & Son’s trucking Co. Leroy was a telephone engineer for TDS Telecom of Herndon, PA for many years as well as a private contractor. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. He was a member, Deacon and choir member at Sugar Run Church of the Brethren in Shirleysburg, PA and led the congregation in worship many Sunday mornings. He was always our first choice to lead our family in prayer when we gathered together for holidays and celebrations.

Leroy enjoyed hunting, riding four-wheelers, his Harley Davidson, spending time at the family hunting cabin, classic car shows, Hill Valley/Path Valley Speedway, Nascar races, trips to the beach and camping with family at the Woodsmen’s Carnival in Potter County. He enjoyed collecting various items such as comic books, coins and antique lunchboxes. Leroy loved being on the road traveling with his wife Peggy.

Leroy was an exemplary servant leader to his family, friends, co-workers and his community. He put others first and made many sacrifices over the numerous years he worked away from home. He loved his wife and family deeply and often bragged about his many grand-children and great-grandchildren and eventually ran out of fingers to hold up to count.

Leroy will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of his family here now and those to come.
