Jean Shiffer Walker, age 94, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025, surrounded by her family.
She was born on June 2, 1931, in Huntingdon, PA to Russell and Margaret (Anderson) Shiffer. Growing up, Jean attended several different schools as the family moved frequently across the state to follow her father’s construction work. The family eventually settled in Three Springs, PA. Jean graduated in 1948 from Saltillo High School, where she met her husband, Harold. They were married on December 10, 1950 and celebrated nearly 65 years of marriage before Harold passed away.
Fresh out of high school, Jean worked for Swigart Associates in Huntingdon. As a young mother, she worked part-time at Gracey’s Grocery Store, and in later years worked for Dallco Industries. She was the family’s trusted seamstress for all projects and repairs.
Jean was deeply involved in her church and community. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Three Springs where she served as secretary and taught Sunday School. She sang with the Amazing Grace Singers and in recent years helped with Mondays with Jesus. She was also the secretary for the Three Springs Cemetery Association and the Three Springs Water Authority and volunteered countless hours to the local 4-H club and the Three Springs Swimming Pool.
A child of the Great Depression, Jean never wasted anything- whether it was fabric, food, or an old underwear elastic band that might be useful someday. Those values stayed with her for life. She was famously self-sufficient and still mowing her own grass at 94. She always said she “never wanted to be a bother”, and while everyone agreed she never was, she likely would have disagreed and kept doing it herself anyways.
Jean is survived by her children: Rick and his wife Judy (Ashman) of Three Springs; Tom and his wife Coreda (Painter) of Rockhill Furnace; and Barbie and her husband Eric Bloom of Berkeley Springs, WV, her seven grandchildren: Ricky and Carla (Yohn), Tommy and Sonja (Walz), Kelly, Kristy DeLuca, Kari and Jon Shapiro, Zach Bloom, and Margaret (Bloom) and Justin Hoffman, and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, and her dear sisters, Mary Louise Wible and Julia Covert.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, December 27, 2025 at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, 565 Ridgley St., Orbisonia, PA with Rev. Faith Anderson and Pastor Joe Barrett officiating. Interment will be made privately at Three Springs Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11:00 AM until the time of the service on Saturday.
