Dr. Joseph O. Stevens

July 14, 1922 ~ January 26, 2020 (age 97)


Dr. Joseph O. Stevens, 97, Orbisonia, PA died Sunday morning January 26, 2020 at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home.

Born July 14, 1922 at Orbisonia, he was the son of the late Dr. Ralph C. and Ella S. (Carothers) Stevens.  He was married to Marian J. Kephart on October 22, 1955 at Orbisonia. Mrs. Stevens preceded in death on October 29, 2011.

Dr. Stevens is survived by two sons, Joseph P. Stevens, Huntingdon, PA and James A. Stevens and wife Dulcie, Carlisle, PA.  A daughter Amy Jo Newingham is deceased.

There are six grandchildren: Alysha Newingham, Thomas Newingham, Angela Stevens, Kelly Stevens, Nathaniel Stevens and Haley Stevens along with two step grandchildren, Craig and Jeffrey Martz and a step great granddaughter Michele Martz.

One sister Sarah Jane Hess survives of Ligonier, PA.

Two sisters Eleanor Cladius and Maxine Vieau and a brother Ralph T. Stevens are deceased.

He was a member of the Orbisonia United Methodist Church where he taught the Men’s Sunday School class for many years.

Dr. Stevens served as a pilot in the 9th U. S. Army Air Corps, 387th Bomb Group, 559th Squadron serving in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe where he was awarded the Silver Star and an Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters. 

He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1952 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (DDS).  He practiced as a dentist in Orbisonia for 50 years until retirement. 

Dr. Stevens was a former Boy Scout leader, was active in the Southern Huntingdon County High School Booster Club and was instrumental in the establishment of the Huntingdon County Vo-Tech School.

He was a member of Madden-Winnick Post 518 American Legion, Orbisonia.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the Orbisonia United Methodist Church, 613 Cromwell Street, Orbisonia, PA with Rev. Ed Seeley officiating.  Interment will be at Orbisonia Cemetery. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service.
