David E. Slates, Jr., 66, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 20, surrounded by loved ones after a courageous battle with mantle cell lymphoma.
Born July 28, 1954 in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late David and Phyllis (Park) Slates. He was married to his loving wife Marcia Crouse on June 16, 1984 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Shade Gap.
Mr. Slates is survived by his wife at their home in Shirleysburg and his daughter, Sarah Slates, of Monongahela. He is also survived by his sister, Joyce “Cookie” Zeveny and husband, David, of Nanticoke, PA, brother-in-laws Patrick Crouse and wife, Holly, of Gambrills, MD, Francis Crouse and wife, Pamela, of RD, Shirleysburg, PA, William Crouse of Mount Union, PA, Myron “Sonny” Fish of RD, Three Springs, PA and a sister-in-law Valerie Thomas and husband, Kerry, of Saltillo. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by three children in infancy and two sisters, Jeanne Fish and Judy Slates.
Mr. Slates was a member of St. Catherine’s of Sienna Catholic Church, Mt. Union.
He was a graduate of Southern Huntingdon County High School. Mr. Slates worked in his family owned and operated business, Slates Salvage, for over 30 years. At the age of 60, he impressively returned to school at Huntingdon County Career and Technology Center to pursue his interest in nursing and became a licensed practical nurse (LPN). During his nursing career, he worked at the Shirley Home for the Aged and AristaCare at Woodland Park. He was well known and appreciated by residents, their family members, and his co-workers as a caring and devoted nurse.
Mr. Slates was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips with friends and family.
His family and friends will remember him for his caring heart, wit and wisdom, sense of adventure, and most of all, his courage and strength throughout his life but especially during his battle with cancer. He touched the lives of countless people, is loved by many, and will be greatly missed.
A private mass will be held at St. Catherine’s of Sienna Catholic Church, Mount Union, PA with Father Joseph Fleming officiating.
Due to COVID related restrictions, a celebration of life will be planned for a later date.
