Betty Jean (Bendel) Hamman, 100, of Elizabethtown, passed away on June 19, 2026, at Hershey Medical Center. Betty was born on October 14, 1925, in Elrama, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Henry and Reta (Hefner) Bendel. She was the first in her family to enroll in college and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Arts degree. It was at Pitt that she met her future husband, Dr. J. Shue Hamman. After their wedding, Betty and Shue built their life in Harrisburg. There, she balanced raising a family with supporting her husband’s medical practice through office work, while also serving her community as a substitute teacher and tutor in French and Spanish.

After her children were grown, Betty served as Executive Director of the American College of Utilization Review Physicians in Pennsylvania and Florida.

Faith and service were central to Betty’s life. She was a long‑time member of Grace United Methodist Church in Harrisburg, where she formed lasting friendships and contributed to the life of the congregation. She was also active in several organizations, including Phi Mu Sorority and Stephen Ministries, and the Harrisburg Chapter of the Jaycees,

In retirement, Betty and Shue found joy in sunshine and community, dividing their time between Florida, St. Maarten, and Central Pennsylvania. These years were filled with travel, friends, family and the quiet pleasures of a life well‑earned.  In 2004, Betty and Shue moved to the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, where they became active members of the congregation at Sell Chapel. In 2008, Shue passed away on their 61st wedding anniversary.

Betty is survived by her three children, of whom she was immensely proud: John S. Hamman, Jr., DMD (Rhonda) of Valdosta, Georgia, Susan Hamman Lackey, DO (Gerald) of Chesterland, Ohio, and Heidi Hamman Shakely, JD (William) of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania; and eight grandchildren, John Edwin Hamman (Keli), Lt Col James Hamman, retired (Anna), Joseph Hamman (Kayla), Gerald Lackey, Jr., PhD (Francisco), Betty Lackey, DO (Joseph), Susan Lackey, Jr. (Arilene), William Shakely, JD (Shannon), and Daniel Shakely. She is also survived by fourteen great‑grandchildren and one great‑great‑grandchild, each a testament to the enduring reach of her love and the generations shaped by her example.

Betty’s longtime companion, Donald Clark, preceded her in death.

Betty will be remembered for her grace, her generosity, and the deep love she held for her family. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the family she cherished.

A graveside service will be held on June 27 at 11:00 a.m. at the I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery in Rockhill, Pennsylvania with Rev. Deborah Valiton-Carnish officiating.
